Against the backdrop of terror threats to coastal areas, marine police stations would be set up under a Rs 500-crore plan as Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Monday asked the southern states to step up vigilance and mutual coordination to effectively tackle the threat posed by terrorist outfits.

Talking to reporters after chairing a day-long conference of Chief Ministers and Home Ministers of southern states on coastal security, he said the Centre would extend all necessary assistance to the states to strengthen security measures along the coastline.

Under the first phase, Rs 500 crores had been released to set up marine police stations and modernise security set-up along the southern coastline, he said.

Chief Ministers Y S Rajasekhar Reddy (Andhra Pradesh), V S Atchuthanandan (Kerala) and Rangaswami (Puducherry) attended the meeting while Karnataka and Tamil Nadu were represented by their Home Ministers and other officials.
